Alternative Staffing Strategy offers impacts, lessons for workforce development

Read a collection of stories
that highlight findings from various Mott Foundation-funded initiatives in the field of alternative staffing, and that illustrate the emerging success of this unique workforce development strategy.

carpenter Welcome to the Alternative Staffing Alliance. We are a national association of alternative staffing programs dedicated to helping motivated, disadvantaged individuals participate and succeed in the mainstream labor market through temporary and temporary-to-permanent job placements. The Alliance works to support and strengthen alternative staffing practitioners, promote and expand the sector, and raise employers’ sourcing standards to improve the temporary work experience of all low-skilled workers.

As a dynamic community of practice, the Alliance provides member organizations with practical resources in the form of business and industry information, peer learning opportunities and technical support to help them operate more effectively. We also work to raise awareness about the efficacy and impact of the alternative staffing model to attract new business, new practitioners and new resources to the field.

Sector Description: During the last two decades, temporary help has ranked as the fastest growing segment of the American workforce. The “alternative” staffing sector evolved as community developers and advocates for people on the margins of the economy recognized the potential of the temporary staffing model to create pathways for career advancement for low-income individuals poorly served by the conventional staffing sector. Alternative staffing organizations (ASOs) identify labor market opportunities and help low-skilled, unemployed and disadvantaged individuals access them by making temporary and temp-to-perm job placements on a competitive, fee-for-service basis.
